A new Starcraft game at Blizzcon seems almost certain now
It already seemed likely that Starcraft would make an appearance at BlizzCon. Now it would be stranger if it didn’t. Blizzard’s official website for Starcraft Remastered is currently ‘glitching out,’ and diving into the backend has revealed a series of secret messages that point to additional events in the Starcraft timeline. Add in recent reports of potential partnerships for the RTS game, and a suspicious gap in the BlizzCon stage schedule, and it all seems rather straightforward.
Blizzard has absolutely packed BlizzCon 2026 to the brim, with constant panels and tournaments throughout the two-day ceremony. There’s just one very notable break, and it’s early on day one – right on the main stage. It’d be very strange to just leave a full hour between the World of Warcraft and Diablo developer updates, especially given that the typical break for audience shuffling is only 15 minutes for other elements, and a new Starcraft game would be the obvious fit.
The latest development is this glitched Starcraft Remastered website. It’s not hard to spot, as shown below; almost every element on the page gets a turn to flicker and flash, or shift awkwardly out of place and back. Right-click to inspect the page more closely, and navigate over to the ‘console’ tab, and you’ll probably encounter some strange messages, which have been gradually changing over the past several hours, and seem to point to events that take place beyond the end of Starcraft 2.
Reddit user ‘RaiausderDose’ has been compiling these messages on the Starcraft Reddit for the past several hours, and they include several dates in 2575. That’s 67 years on from the concluding act of Starcraft 2’s epilogue, Into the Void. Among the other cryptic messages are what appear to be vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, etc) and military transmissions, some of which were initially displayed in binary.
“Theta Squadron is en route, anticipate arrival to Roxara on 2575-08-09,” reads one. Some of the message has been blocked out, but it mentions a freighter arriving on the planet (which can be found in Starcraft’s Koprulu Sector), and plans to begin work “immediately on landing.” It also adds, “Take the utmost caution when handling the crates. They are pivotal to our research. Any carelessness or mistreatment could jeopardize the success of our operation.”
The next question is obviously, “What is this new project?” It’s curious that Blizzard used the Starcraft Remastered website to tease this, rather than the Starcraft 2 one, which appears to be functioning as normal. I’ve recently been replaying the Starcraft 2 campaign, and while it shows its age in some parts, it does so rather gracefully; I don’t think it’s in desperate need of a remaster.
The rumors, for years now, have been that we’re due for a Starcraft shooter of some sort. This could be an internal project. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in his 2024 book ‘Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment’ that the developer was taking a fresh swing at such a project. Schreier also mentions the involvement of former Far Cry boss Dan Hay, who moved from Ubisoft to Blizzard in 2022, which would tip the scales of possibility in favor of an FPS.
Other reports have suggested Blizzard has been in talks with several companies to handle a new Starcraft game, with Nexon being the name that came to the forefront. Just this week, Korean news outlet Chosun reported that a deal between Nexon and Blizzard was “on the verge of being finalized.” While it called the potential project “Starcraft 3,” that reads mostly as speculation rather than what we’re actually getting.
If you ask me what I want, it’s a new Starcraft RTS. But the team that made that is no longer with Blizzard, and it’s not in Nexon’s traditional wheelhouse either, so I don’t know how much confidence I’d have in such a project. Could it be the spiritual successor to Starcraft: Ghost, the stealth-action third-person shooter starring Nova, which was first announced in 2002 and then quietly floated around until Blizzard officially confirmed in 2014 that it had been canned?
In all honesty, if we get something new from the Starcraft universe (and it’s good) I’ll be more than satisfied. I’d prefer a game over a TV show or movie, but the mere acknowledgement that one of Blizzard’s greatest creations is still worthy of consideration would be enough. Keep your eyes on the Blizzcon main stage for Saturday September 12 at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm BST / 10pm CEST, because there’s a good chance that’s when we’ll know for sure.
