New Overwatch season – latest hero, maps, and changes

What’s in the new Overwatch season? Every two months, a new Overwatch season takes place, introducing new heroes, skins, maps, and more. At the beginning of the year, Blizzard wiped the seasonal numbering and established the narrative arc in 2026 as ‘The Reign of Talon’, marking a new era for the hero shooter.

There used to be big gaps between the launches of new Overwatch characters, but that has changed with The Reign of Talon. As for Overwatch maps, the release cadence isn’t as frequent, but there are map reworks to look forward to, in addition to brand-new releases.

New Overwatch season release date

Overwatch Season 3, Into the Tiger’s Den, arrived on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Blizzard originally confirmed the date with the reveal of new hero Shion, who debuted at the same time.

Blizzard usually teases details about the new hero in the weeks leading up to the new season. In Shion’s case, we got an initial reveal trailer exactly one week before its launch, followed by a gameplay teaser and kit rundown a couple of days later.

Overwatch Season 3 overview

Season 3 follows the success of its second season with yet another DPS hero, Shion, plus new Hybrid map Neon Junction, which is being bedded in with the three-week-long Anima Strike Overwatch event. Venture’s also helping you scoop up more loot in Excavation Initiative, while there’s a new Overwatch battle pass to grind for goodies.

Blizzard is continuing to hunt for alternative gameplay angles for certain heroes. The studio’s worked with content creators to make ‘Community Crafted’ adjustments to Reinhardt, Baptiste, Ashe, and Sombra, which will temporarily be playable from June 30 – July 13.

As Overwatch’s roster has continued to expand, it’s necessitated a bit of a UI/UX rethink when it comes to hero select. This has now been redesigned in a big way, and should hopefully be a marked improvement over its predecessor.

New hero

Shion is the latest hero added in Overwatch Season 3, and she has quite the kit. Be sure to check out the full Shion abilities list before you go and first time her in ranked – we know what you’re like, probably. It remains to be seen how high she’ll climb on our Overwatch tier list, but we’re confident she’ll be popular.

New map

Overwatch doesn’t typically launch new maps on a regular basis. There’s already a solid rotation, and we can imagine creating and testing whole new environs is incredibly resource-intensive.

However, after plenty of community badgering for a new Hybrid map, Blizzard has come up with the goods in the form of Neon Junction. Set in the beating heart of Tokyo, you’ll find all the usual cyberpunk trimmings, big ol’ mechas, and some less-enticing alleyways. Be sure to spend some time exploring it in quick play first, lest you tank your Overwatch rank.

Stadium changes

As for Overwatch Stadium, Season 3 is going hard. We’re talking roster-wide refreshes, and larger reworks for Doomfist, Hazard, Kiriko, Sojourn, Tracer, and more. Grouping restrictions for ranked have been removed, so you’re free to play with any of your pals – perfect timing considering Oasis University has joined the map pool.

New skins

There’s a brand new tier of Overwatch skins in Season 3: Ultra. These are touted to be the cream of the crop cosmetics, with top tier audiovisuals that are unique from skin to skin, from hero to hero. The first two Ultra skins have gone to Kiriko and Sierra, as part of the new Nyan Café line. Orisa, Reaper, and Ashe are also in line for standard variations of the theme.

If kawaii is not for thee, then Street Rebels might be more up your alley. Blending oni vibes with fresh streetwear, Jetpack Cat, Junker Queen, Mercy, Mizuki, and Wuyang are all looking real slick.

The headliner on the skin front, though, is the Ascendant Phoenix Illari Mythic. This is a multi-level, multi-form skin that allows you to progressively customize Illari through her ascent. It’s giving Elementalist Lux from League of Legends – iykyk.
