Minecraft Dungeons 2 is now playable on Steam Deck, and the blocky ARPG is a perfect fit

Minecraft Dungeons 2 is now Steam Deck Playable, giving you the ability to bring your loot-grinding adventures on the go via Valve’s handheld device. Whether you’ve been looking for an excuse to pick the block-bashing action RPG up, or happen to be on the hunt for something fresh to play on the go, this feels like a marriage made in heaven. As a bonus, Mojang has even thrown in a new balance update that lets you hoard way more wealth.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 takes the solid foundations of its predecessor and continues to build on almost every aspect of it to make something even better. It won’t revolutionize the ARPG space, and doesn’t deliver the hundreds of hours of grind and buildcrafting you might find in Diablo 4 or Path of Exile 2, but it’s an experience that’s robust and rewarding. As a relatively ardent fan of the genre, there was more than enough here to hook me, and if you (or a friend or family member) are an ARPG first-timer, this is the ideal place to start out.

One of the few real disappointments at launch was that there was no reassurance Minecraft Dungeons 2 would work on Steam Deck. Grinding Gear Games recently scored Valve’s ‘Verified’ status for Path of Exile 2, yet the comparatively straightforward action and gear of Minecraft Dungeons 2 was left out in the cold for the handheld audience. That was a shame, because its quick-format questing and relatively repeatable endgame structure seemed as though they’d be an idea fit.

Fortunately, Mojang has now confirmed that, in the wake of a new Minecraft Dungeons 2 update, “the game should be playable on Steam Deck.” It adds that it’s continuing to work on future improvements “to bring full Steam Deck verification,” but notes that you might still run into some issues in the meantime, including missing on-screen keyboard functionality.

Alongside this, the update has a second benefit for all players that’s very welcome – an increase to the maximum Emerald storage cap from 9,999 to 99,999. While it’s a relatively minor issue and did encourage me to keep spending my money while working on my Minecraft Dungeons 2 review, I definitely lost a huge amount of funds to overcapping. This is particularly frustrating in the endgame, where upgrading your full gear set to match your current power level could cost more Emeralds than the amount you could hold at once.

Good news all around then. If you’re after the optimal possible performance, you might want to wait a little while longer until Mojang secures the top-ranked Steam Deck Verified status, but if you’ve been pondering getting into some voxel-based blasting on the move then now’s your chance.
